This certificate was created in the belief that limited English should never be a barrier to receiving excellent and equitable health care. There is a critical need for healthcare professionals who are proficient in medical Spanish and also culturally sensitive. This program consists of two sequential, 7-week courses in online, asynchronous format designed for future and current healthcare professionals (doctors, emergency medical technicians, emergency responders, hospital administrators, medical assistants, nurses, nutritionists, physical therapists, physician assistants, hospice care and social workers as well as others in medical fields) at all levels in their education with a beginning to intermediate knowledge of Spanish. Students will engage in intensive listening, speaking, reading and writing to acquire the medical terminology and cultural awareness to practice more ethical and inclusive patient care.
Students who complete the courses during their undergraduate or graduate program will earn a certificate in Spanish Language for Medical Professionals.
